Nemes Nagy Ágnes: Sequoia forest (Szikvója-erdő in English)

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

Szikvója-erdő (Hungarian)

A fenyőerdő plátói ideája.
Fenyőerdő, amely tízszer nagyobb.

Nem tudhatóan messze, fönn az ágak,
csak onnan tudhatóan, hogy sötét.

A hűvös, óriási törzsek

Sequoia forest (English)

Platonic ideal of pine forest.
Pine forest but ten times greater.

Who knows how far away the branches are:
the only clue is the fact of darkness.

Cool, gigantic trunks,
warm blushes down a fibre-knotted husk
whose pocks suggest a breasted creature,
a breasted deity, whose touch
might be the salvation of your palms
could you but reach above her swollen root.

You sway dizzily in the humid empire,
with its bottle-brown and faint medicinal scent,
and, should the sun find gap enough to peek through,
its glance would mark a shining path that lit
here and nowhere else and answered no known question.
