Pilinszky János: How Ambivalent (Milyen felemás in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Milyen felemás (Hungarian)

Milyen felemás érzések közt élünk,

milyen sokféle vonzások között,

pedig zuhanunk, mint a kő

egyenesen és egyértelmüen.

Hányféle szégyen és képzelt dicsőség

hálójában evickélünk, pedig

napra kellene teregetnünk

mindazt, mi rejteni való.

Milyen

megkésve értjük meg, hogy a

szemek homálya pontosabb lehet

a lámpafénynél, és milyen

későn látjuk meg a világ

örökös térdreroskadását.

How Ambivalent (English)

How ambivalent feelings we live amidst,

how many kinds of different attractions,

yet we fall like heavy stone

straightly and definitely.

So many kinds of shame and fancied glory

make up the net we flounder in, though

we should hang out everything

to be concealed in the sun.

How

late do we understand that the

dimness of eyes can be more precise

than lamplight, and how

late can we realize the world’s

ceaseless sinking to knees.
