Pilinszky János: My Coat of Arms (Címerem in English)

Portre of Pilinszky János

Címerem (Hungarian)

A kegyelem és öröm együtt ért

azzal, amit nyomoruságnak

neveznek általában.

Szög és olaj lehetne címerem,

mit írhatnék azonban szövegéül?

Talán azt, hogy mindent megértek,

felhők futását és disznók fejét

rálapúlva a préskemény palánkra.

De ez is mit jelent?

Nekünk magunknak muszáj végül is

a présbe kényszerűlnünk Befejeznünk

a mondatot.

My Coat of Arms (English)

Mercy and joy got to me together

with what’s called misery

in most cases.

Nail and oil could be my coat of arms,

yet what could I write on it as a motto?

Perhaps that I understand everything,

the course of clouds and the head of pigs

sticking stealthily to the press-hard paling.

But what does it all mean?

We ourselves must in the end be compelled

to squeeze into the press. To complete

the sentence.
