Szép Ernő: My brow gradually sinks (Homlokom lassan leáldoz in English)

Portre of Szép Ernő

Homlokom lassan leáldoz (Hungarian)

Olvastam a felhőt, a tengert
Hallgattam a tavaszt, az őszt
Utaztam éven, éven átal
Álmodtam és ébredtem én

Gyászommal nem kellek halottnak
Nem kellek gazdagnak szivemmel
Szavammal nem kellek szegénynek
A síró gyermek meg nem ért

A rózsa nyíló szája néma
A szélütött fa nem ölelhet
Az őrült víz néz, rám nem ismer
A fölkelt hegy süket tetem

Vad állat nyöszörög a pusztán
Lenn tűz tolong a föld belében
Jég cirkál a világok mellett
Fenn lesnek a kém csillagok

Itt homlokom lassan leáldoz
Sírom fölött a hold vihog már
Csodálkozom, csodálkozom még
Örökkétig csodálkozom

My brow gradually sinks (English)

I read shapes in clouds and the ocean
Have worn out both spring and the autumn,
For years travelled, dreaming my passage
through years and woke among years.

My grief is no use to a dead man,
My heart is no use to a miser,
My words are no use to a pauper,
Sad children don't understand me.

Dumb are the wide mouths of roses,
The tree bowed by wind won't embrace me,
Mad water stares at me, a stranger,
The rising mount is a deaf hulk.

The wild beast whimpers on the prairie,
Fires jostle in the earth's belly,
Ice circles the outermost planets
The stars observe me like bright spies.

My brow gradually sinks head downwards,
The moon sniggers above my tombstone,
I marvel and marvel, I marvel
for ever, marvel at it all.
