Új évezred felé (Hungarian)

Mi kétezerben nem élünk, szegénykém,
az új évezred nem lel itt bennünket;
fekszünk a mélyben, s az ég régi kékjén
fenn, fenn különös új gépek keringnek.
Lebontották a házat, hol születtünk,
– mint a Tabánt. Ágyunk, székünk elégett.
Sok könyvünk méltatlan kezekben eltünt –
s hová lettek alakunkról a képek?
a kőbepólyált, hosszucsontu inkák.

Towards the new millenium (English)

It's not the year two-thousand, my poor love,
the new millenium has not come to bate us;
we're asleep in the deep though the old blue above
is buzzing with a strange new apparatus.
The house where we were born has been knocked flat,
whole districts downed. Our beds and chairs are dust.
Our books are gone (foul hands have seen to that)
our likenesses in art are likewise lost.
New shoes are squeaking down the avenue:
the girls are different, their clothes different too.
Our dreams, like old wine too long bottled, thicken
and grow sweet, till their very flavours sicken.
Time dangles the sun on its slow pendulum
above the earth. And when at last we come
to sleep, it's as if in some distant zone
like long-boned Incas swaddled in the stone.
