Lázár Ervin: The Sock With A Hole (A lyukas zokni in English)

Portre of Lázár Ervin

– Azért én szebb vagyok nálad – mondta a lyuk a zokninak.
Ezen a zokni elgondolkodott.
– Na ugye! – hangoskodott a lyuk.
Most már alig maradt valami a zokniból.
– Teljesen tönkreteszel – siránkozott a zokni.

The Sock With A Hole (English)

Once upon a time there was a sock with a hole in it. When it was new, it didn’t use to be just anyone, it was made of noble material with some jaunty patterns on it. But now it’s already grown old. And, as said before, there was a hole in it. That cocky, frazzled kind. The sock and the hole lived at the bottom of  the most ramshackle drawer of a ramshackle wardrobe.
’In fact, I’m more beautiful than you,’ said the hole to the sock.
’What,’ wondered the sock, ’how come more beautiful?! What makes you more beautiful?’
’Because people can see through me,’ said the hole.
’Oh, please,’ said the sock in an instructive manner, ’what’s beautiful about me is exactly that I’m not transparent, and look at all these wonderful, blue patterns here!’
’And you’re dirty, too,’ added the hole paying no heed to the instruction, ’but I never ever get dirty.’
It made the sock think a bit.
’There you are!’ blustered the hole. ’Well now, you also realize it. It isn’t fair at all that I’m so small, and you’re so big.’
It set about to grow. Soon there was hardly anything left of the sock. The hole was bigger than the rest of the sock.
’You’re ruining me,’ moaned the sock.
’Enjoy being able to stay together with such a wonderful hole,’ added the hole in an arrogant way, and it grew even bigger.
’Ouch, you’re killing me!’ cried the sock out, and then the hole puffed up with pride grew so huge that not a bit was left of the sock. But as the sock disappeared, so did the hole. Since if there’s no sock, there’s no hole, either.
So the non-existent hole can now yearn after the non-existent sock.
