Nemes Nagy Ágnes: The Garden of Eden (Paradicsomkert Angol nyelven)

Nemes Nagy Ágnes portréja

Paradicsomkert (Magyar)

I.
Egy szál kövér pipacs lobog,
hol az erdőig ér a rét,
egy szál pipacs, fél-szirmát lekonyítva,
akár a nyúl a fél-fülét.

Itt a határ. Itt reng a páfrány,
míg a karhossznyi sün kilép,
a völgybe innen hempereg le,
akár egy pohos barna-medve,
nem borzolódó, lágy tüskéivel
a homokot szelíden hersegetve.

Lejjebb vad bokrokban a szöllő,
hol törzsre érez, felszökik,
s óriás babérlevelek
közül csüggeszti kebleit.

Úgy ring a zöld, akár a víz,
tömör hullámmal csap a hegynek,
a szirtek lágy hússal remegnek,
csak itt-ott villan ki a lomb
alól a kő, a csont,
és foltos, szaggatott a táj:
kövér, kopár.

S ott lent, hol kitárul a völgy,
ahol fátyol-eres gomolyba
a hőben minden szerte-folyna,
egy sor feszes, mértani-rendü szálfa,
a táj szélén éles fekete szálka,
nem olvadozva-rengve, nem lazulva,
a fény csücskét mégegyszer földbe szúrja,
s állja a hőt, – közükben
a szeletekre szabdalt végtelennel:

a szálka-fák közt áttükröz a tenger.

*

Hová indulsz te vékony, gyönge-csontú?
Nem hallod-e fejed felett
halkan pendülni az eget –
mint az ezüsthöz koccanó üveg,
bong, bong a bolt – nem hallod-e
a seregélyeket?
Nem látod-e, amint lecsapnak,
rezgését a szőlőlugasnak?
S nem látod-e, amint a fürtből
a csőr alatt kibuggyanó
bogyók sűrű illata füstöl?

Nem érzed-e ott fönn, a mennybeli
fények mögött a mélyebb feketét?
Nagy, suhogó vásznakon rajzolódva
most kezdenek derengeni,
most, most fordulnak új alakzatokba
a kintibb ég halvány jelképei.
Csepp zökkenés: a föld fordulni kezd,
orsózza már, orsózza az időt,
útjára indít minden erjedőt,
mézgás meleggel tapadnak az ágak,
nem érzed-e: átfűlik avar-ágyad,
és széthasadt gyümölcsök közt heversz?
Oly ifjú vagy. Hogy bírod el a vágyat?

Nem félted-e a két szemed?
Fordul az év, takard el, míg lehet.

Nem félted-e a gyönge szád?
Nagyon tapad a szőlő méze rád.

Nem félted-e a válladat?
Az indiánszínű szeplők miatt
olyan, mintha mindig sütné a nap –
nem félted-e, hogy sustorogva rászáll
az őszelő, a súlyos indián-nyár,
s te térdre hullsz és ottmaradsz, lerogyva
egy perzselő foltnyi homokra,
majd felkiáltva hemperedsz be
a vonagló-indás berekbe,
de ott is megmar a növényi láng,
a roppant napban szinte láthatatlan
kék borszesz fénnyel sistergő katáng,
és csontig eszi minden ízedet –

nem félted-e a két szemed?

És ott a Lány. Nem néz reád.
Nem félted-e gyönge szád?
Ő térdig fűben áll, s a zöld
úgy tükrözik a bőrén,
mint a fehér mennyezeten
a kinti, zöld verőfény,
mikor a fákra űl a nap –

nem félted-e a válladat?

Aztán alkony.
Nagy, hűvös ég.
Utoljára a felhők felrohannak.
S oly nesztelen csapó sörénnyel,
olyan hasító hegyü fénnyel,
olyan habokkal, torlaszokkal,
oly óriás mozdulatokkal
készülődik a tépett kora-éj,
s oly űzött némasággal, hangtalan,
mint a kimondhatatlan szenvedély.

Lebágyad. Csönd. A hegytetőn
ül mozdulatlan két alak,
két oldalról a hűvös, érdes
fatörzsnek vetve hátukat.

Körül, a síkságból kiszökve
derékig ködben ott lebeg
egy-egy üres, aprócska vulkán.
Holdfényben néma hold-hegyek.
A holdfény egyre élesebb,
s mind feketébb az éjszaka.
Szél mozdul olykor.
S válaszolva
végigrezeg a fuvalomra
fejük fölött a Fa.

II.
A hűvös pára földre cseppen:
egy angyal jár az éji kertben.
Csuhája a bokrokhoz ér,
sutrálja őket, mint a szél.
Aztán megáll. Embernyi botja
végét befúrja a homokba,
két tenyerét a bot fejére,
támasztja állát a kezére.

Két lomb-szelet közt messze láthat:
a földi téren árnyra árnyat.
S ha lefoszt egy-egy árny-pihét,
alatta újabb árnyalatnyi
temérdek újabb árny szakad ki,
egy óriási vadmadár…

De nem. Elég.
Elég a kép.
Lélegzik egyet. Fullatag
a végtelen árny-zuhatag,
jöjjön helyette más alak,
s látja a földet, mint halat.
Az űr vizéből gömbölyű,
fényes hátát kidugja. Pára
lövell belőle felzihálva,
és képtelenül melegen:
léttelen, jeges vizeken.

– Mi lesz a vérrel? – szólt az angyal –
mely már zubog, hallod, Uram?
Én, aki élek hangtalan,
én, ki haránt-meredeken
fúródom át a tereken,
talptól szemöldökig sötét,
deres szárnyamba burkolózva,
én mit bánom? – de ő, a két
félre hasadt vérjárta forma,
aki e hal, vagy e madár
hátán kapaszkodik, hörög,
csupasz karját nyújtva riadtan,
mézgás-szemű majomkölyök,
s Te úgy nézed, úgy hallgatod,
mint ő az állatot –
Őt mire szántad? – Mire néki
a testtelenből testbe lépni?
Mire gömbnyi szemében úszva
a fenn száguldó esti ég?
a rostra-feszített ostya-vékony
szirom? mire e rothadékony
gyönyörüség?
Mire, ha majd emelkedik,
az emelet, a bakelit?
a cink? a drót? a drótvilágon
mért fennakadni, rongy az ágon,
mire pengén kis-ujjnyi-forma,
acélba-edzett vércsatorna?

Mire a benti boltozat,
a csont alatt?
A halvány idegekkel osztott,
eleven-hálós végtelen:
belülre felrajzolt horoszkóp?
Mire a lét alatti lét?
az állat-rend, a fű-család?
kövek? palák?
Vakítsd meg most! Nőjön vakon!
vagy szórd a szélbe, Fergeteg!
fújd szét, elektron-felleget!
Hiszen tiéd az irgalom –

Így szólt az angyal.
Válla mellett
némán himbált egy bodza-ág,
foszforos fényű tenyerén
tartva derengő illatát –
így szólt, mig földre hullt a hold,
az is kerek, tenyérnyi folt,
így szólt, míg fönt-lent sűrüsödve
szitált a fény a lombközökbe,
s már miljom kartalan, fehér,
világító ezüst-tenyér
hullámlott, miljom cseppnyi mérleg –
így szólt, amíg a lombon át
a tálkák rezgő mozdulattal
latolták már az éjszakát –

Így szólt, s elhallgatott az angyal.

The Garden of Eden (Angol)

I
One fat poppy dawdles
where field meets forest,
just one poppy its lug
droopy as a rabbit's.

It's the country. Fern swaddles
an arm-long hedgehog:
he tumbles into the glen
a pot-bellied bruin
printing the sand
with his soft, spiky skin.

Vines dive under undergrowth
till they come on a log
and press their breasts
between leaves of a laurel.

Greenery shakes like water,
breaks in a solid wave
on trembling cliffs and caves -
a glint of bone
visible and then gone, a landscape altered:
sleek, bleak.

Below, the glen expands
and everything appears to melt
lightwards into a cloud-belt;
there a screen of vertical timber
(slivers that blackedge the field)
unmelts, unmoves, and never yields,
thrusting a last light into the clay,
bearing the heat - between
gapped infinity...

between those silver-trees, a sea reflects.

*

Where are you going, frail and weak-boned?
Don't you hear the sky
softly ping above your eye
as glass clangs on silver
or the sky's vault echoes, don't you hear
starlings cheer?
As these swoop, don't you see
the shuddering vinery?
Fruit's thick scent as it spills
from the cluster
under their shrieking bills?

Or feel up there a deeper dark
behind the heavenly lights?
They have just begun to sparkle,
traceable on flowing screens;
pale signs of a farther sky
assume now further signs.
A minor jounce:
earth begins to turn, to bobbin Time,
germinating every thing -
boughs tacky with resinous heat -
sense your leaf-mulch bed seethe
sense you lie on exploded fruit?
How young you are! To endure your passion!

Don't you fear for your eyes?
The year's turning, cover them while you can.

Don't you fear for your gentle lips?
Too sticky for the honey of grapes.

And fear for your shoulder?
Forever tanned in appearance
with its India-copper freckles.
Don't you fear the heavy trance
of an Indian summer will lean and murmur?
And you will fall and stay fallen
a heap amid a scorching midden,
and then will fall with a fearful shout
into a flailing grove it bound with twines.
And in that torment yet you'll taste the sting
of wild chicory its meth-lamp hissing
near invisible in the huge sun's haze,
and know your flesh blaze of its lightest clinker –

don't you fear for your eyes?

There's the Girl. She doesn't look at you!
Don't you fear for your unsullied mouth?
She's standing up to the knees in grass, green
mirrored on the palimpsest of her skin
like green exterior sunlight dallying
on a white ceiling
while the sun sits in the boughs of trees -

don't you fear for your shoulder?

*

And so, dusk.
A large chilly sky.
The clouds charge in a final muster.
Scattered nightfall equips itself
with a mane silently lashing
with light sharply piercing
with foaming drifts
with titanic gestures
with hounded muteness silent
like ineffable passion.

Languishes. Silence. Two still figures sit
at the hill-top, resting their backs
against the gruff surface
of the tree, one each side of it.

Around about them, several empty
minute volcanoes are floating
from the level plain waist deep in fog.
Lunar foothills mute in moonlight.
Which grows sharper
the night ever deeper.
Stirs the wind betimes.
Above them
answering the breeze
the Tree trembles.

II
Cooling night's vapour drops onto the ground:
an Angel saunters in the darkened grounds.
His mantle catching in the clinging wood
sets it to murmur, as the new wind would.
He halts. And thrusts the point
of his man-sized staff into the clay;
wrapping all his fingers round the handle
resting his chin upon his hands.

Thus he can see between two bonds of green
shadow on shadow on the earthly scene.
And if he pull a single shade away
new shadows in their shades display
new shadows
ready for pulling. A lumbering predator...

But no. Enough
now of this picture and its stuff.
Deeply he sighs. The ceaseless torrent
of shadow on shadow is a torment.
If other figurations others furnish,
his eye beholds the earth to be a fish:
the waters of the universe
break on its arched and shining scales:
steam spouts from its back in gales
and in a liquid hectic furnace
breaks it forth from waters icy, beingless.

"What of the blood," the Angel said,
"that seethes yet, can'st thou hear it, Lord?
For I am alone who lives silent,
I am alone who crosses space
in most dangerous passage
shrouded in darkness from hair to toe
wrapped in my own frosted wings.
So what do I care? But he who is
divided male and female, in whom blood sings,
claps the back of fish or pullet,
his breath rattling in his gullet
and bare arm outstretched in terror:
a gummy-eyed infant primate.
It is he whom you fix and focus
on as he fixes on lake and locust.
And why? What's your business for him?
What purpose has divided flesh from spirit,
what purpose has the night sky overhead
spin-drifting in the spheres, his eyes;
petals wafer-thin racked on ligaments?
To what end disposable delight?
When bakelite and multi-storey
stagger and rise, cable and zinc...
why should he hang, a rag upon a stick,
hang on a cable, hang on a world of cable?
What's the use of a finger scored for art
that fits the runnel of a bloodied sword?

Why vaulted chambers
beneath the bone?
An infinite living network
squared off by nerves
with horoscopes incised?
What use Being beneath Being,
order of things, species of grass,
slates, stones?
Yes, blind him now, blind let him grow,
or throw him to the hurricano,
he's just electron-detritus!
And thou art mercy -"

Thus spake the Angel.
And his shoulder
swayed the branch of a young elder
gathering its shy fragrance
in the emptiness of his glowing fist.
Thus spake the Angel, while the round
and hand-sized moon fell to the ground.
Thus spake he, while between the trees the light
disposed itself as density and height.
There were a million armless, white
and luminous silver palms upturned
and rippling, a million tiny balances -
Thus spake the Angel. Meanwhile through the leaves
many-branching Libra heaved and burned,
oscillating, weighing up the night -

Thus spake he, thus was quiet.
