Sachs, Nelly: Chorus Of The Wanderers (Chor der Wandernden in English)

Portre of Sachs, Nelly

Chorus Of The Wanderers (English)

We wanderers
dragging the way we have come as baggage behind us –
we are dressed
in a rag of the land we pause in –
we feed
from the stewpot of the language we learnt through our tears.

We wanderers,
a door awaits us at every cross-roads
behind it the doe, the orphan-eyed Israel of animals
disappears into its rustling forests
and the lark rejoices over the golden fields.
A sea of solitude stands silently with us
at whatever door we knock.
O ye guardians girded with flaming swords,
the grains of dust under our wandering feet
are already starting to spurt
blood into our grandchildren –

O we wanderers standing at the doors of the Earth,
our hats have stars pinned to them
a greeting from afar.
Our bodies lie like inch rules on the ground
measuring out the horizon –

O we wanderers,
crawling worms for shoes yet to come,
our death will lie like a threshold
across your bolted doors!
