Auden, W. H.: Egy zsarnok sirfelirata (Epitaph on a Tyrant in Hungarian)

Portre of Auden, W. H.

Epitaph on a Tyrant (English)

Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after,
And the poetry he invented was easy to understand;
He knew human folly like the back of his hand,
And was greatly interested in armies and fleets;
When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter,
And when he cried the little children died in the streets.

Egy zsarnok sirfelirata (Hungarian)

A tökély egy nemét tűzte célul magának,
s oly költészetet űzött, mit bárki azonnal ért;
az emberi dőreséget ismerte, mint tenyerét,
s fölöttébb érdekelték flották és hadseregek;
ha nevetett, körötte szenátorok hahotáztak,
s ha kiabált, az utcán meghaltak a kisgyerekek.
