Davie, Donald: Chopin kertjében (In Chopin’s Garden in Hungarian)

Portre of Davie, Donald

In Chopin’s Garden (English)

I remember the scarlet setts
Of the little-frequented highway
From Warsaw to the West
And Chopin's house, one Sunday.

I remember outside the windows,
As the pianist plucked a ring
From her thin white finger, the rows
Of unanchored faces waiting,

And a climbing vapour, storm-wrack
Wreathing up, heavy with fruit.
Darkened the skies at their back
On the old invasion-route.

Masovia bows its birches
Resignedly. Again
A rapid army marches
Eastward over the plain,

And fast now It approaches.
Turbulence, agonies,
As the poised musician broaches
The polonaise, storm from the keys.

See them, ennobled by
The mass and passage, these
Faces stained with the sky,
Supple and fluid as trees.

Chopin kertjében (Hungarian)

Vasárnap... Alig járt út
Visz Varsóból nyugatra.
Rőt kőlapokon tovafut...
Chopinnek a háza van arra.

Még látom a kertben a nőt...
Lehúzta a zongora mellett
A gyűrűt, az ablak előtt.
Feszült arcok figyeltek.

Felhő szállt föl, vihar éledt
E gyümölcsszagú nyárutón,
Mögöttük az ég feketéllett
A háboru járta uton.

Megadón hajlongnak a nyírfák,
Gyors had tör előre megint
Keletre. Sötétül a síkság,
Vész tombol, hallom a kínt

A felzúgó polonézben
Míg a művész gyors keze száll.
S én megbabonázva nézem,
Hogy a zongora hangjainál

Nemesen szirtesednek az arcok
Az ég komor íve alatt,
Változnak, hallva a harcot,
S mint a fák, hajlanak.
