Eliot, T. S.: Tájak (Landscapes in Hungarian)

Portre of Eliot, T. S.

Landscapes (English)

I. New Hampshire

Children's voices in the orchard

Between the blossom- and the fruit-time:

Golden head, crimson head,

Between the green tip and the root.

Black wing, brown wing, hover over;

Twenty years and the spring is over;

To-day grives and to-morrow grieves,

Cover me over, light-in-leaves;

Golden head, black wing,

Cling,swing,

Spring,sing,

Swing up into the apple-tree.

II. Virginia

Red river, red river,

Slow flow heat is silence

No will is still as a river

Still. Will heat move

Only through the mocking-bird

Heard once? Still hills

Wait. Gates wait. Purple trees,

White trees, wait, wait,

Delay, decay. Living, living,

Never moving. Ever moving

Iron thoughts came with me

And go with me:

Red river river river.

III. Usk

Do not suddenly break the branch, or

Hope to find

The white hart over the white well.

Glance aside, not for lance, do not spell

Old enchantments. Let them sleep.

'Gently dip, but not too deep',

Lift your eyes

Where the roads dip and where the roads rise

Seek only there

Where the grey light meets the green air

The Hermit's chapel, the pilgrim's prayer.

IV. Rannoh, near Glenckow

Here the crow starves, here the patient stag

Breeds for the the rifle. Between the soft moor

and the soft sky, scarcely room

To leap or to soar. Substance crumbles, in the thin air

Moon cold or moon hot. The road winds in

Littlessness of ancient war,

Langour of broken steel,

Clamour of confused wrong, apt

In silence. Memory is strong

Beyon the bone. Pride snapped,

Shadow of pride is long, in te long pass

No concurrence of bone.

V. Cape Ann

O quick quick quick, quick hear the song sparrow,

Swamp sparrow, fox-sparrow, vesper sparrow

At dawn and dusk. Follow the dance

Of goldenfinch at noon. Leave to chance

The Blackburnian wabler, the shy one. Hail

With shrill whistle the note of the quail, the bob-white

Dodging the bay-bush. Follow the feet

Of the walker, the water-thrush. Follow the flight

Of the dancing arrow, the purple martin. Greet

In silence the bullbat. All are delectable. Sweet sweet sweet

But resign this land at the end, resign it

To its true owner, the tough one, the sea gull.

The palaver is finished.

Tájak (Hungarian)

I. New Hampshire

Gyerekhangok a gyümölcsöskertben

Virágzástól az almaszüretig:

Arany fej, piros fej,

Zöld korona meg a gyökér között.

Fekete szárny, barna, leng az égre;

Húsz év, s a tavasznak vége;

Ma baj van, holnap más bajom van,

Borulj fölibém, fény a lombban;

Fekete szárny, arany fej,

Hopp, fel,

Dobd fel,

Lendülni föl az almafára.

II. Virginia

Vörös folyó, vörös folyó,

Lassú hab néma hőség

Nincs akarat oly halk, mint egy folyó

Csöndje. A hő csupán

Egy régen rikkantott rigón át

Mozdul-e? Nagycsöndű dombok

Várnak. S kapuk. Bíbor fák,

Fehér fák, várva várnak,

Kitartva, korhadva. És élnek, élnek,

Sosem mozognak. Velem mozognak

Vas gondolataim, mert elkísértek

S jönnek velem:

Vörös folyó, folyó folyó.

III. Usk

Ágat se reccsents, vagy ne remélj

Fehér szarvasbikát

A fehér forrásnál. Félre nézz,

Régi varázslatokat ne idézz,

Békéjüket el ne űzd.

„Megmerülj, de megkerülj!"

Így járj, tudd

A kaptatót s a kátyut —

S csak ha látod,

Hogy a szürke fény égszínzöldre vált, ott

Imádkozhat remete és zarándok.

IV. A Rannoch, Glencoe-nál

Itt éhes a varjú, s a türelmes szarvas

Puskára nő fel. Süppeteg föld és ég közt

A tér ha szökkenésnyi, szárnycsapásnyi.

S morzsolódik minden. Bizonytalanban

Úszik hideg hold, tüzes hold. Útkanyarok:

Ős háborúk egykedvűsége,

Tört acél tunyasága,

Zavart sérelmek kiáltozása, jól

Megfér csöndben. Csonton túli, erős

Emlékezet őrzi. Tört szárú büszkeség,

Nyúlik árnya, a hosszú szorosban.

Már nem csap össze csonttal a csont.

V. Cape Ann

Csíp-csíp-csip, hallgasd csípős hajnalon

Csérje, rőtsármány, énekesveréb

Szavát. Dél tájban a tengelicék

Táncát kövesd. S a félénk füzikét

Fel ne riaszd. A virginiai

Fogoly füttyét harsogd, míg bóbiták

Fehére bukdos. Vízirigó nyomát

Kövesd, s nézd, bíborfecskék nyilai

Villognak. Némán köszöntsd a bölömbikát.

Mind gyönyörű. Mind édes, édes, édes.

De aztán menj, és hagyd e partvidéket

Urára, az erőszakos sirályra.

A palávernek vége.
