Hughes, Ted: Mountains

Portre of Hughes, Ted

Mountains (English)

I am a fly if these are not stones,
If these are not stones, they are a finger-

Finger, shoulder, eye.
The air comes and goes over them as if attentively.

They were there yesterday and the world before yesterday,
Content with the inheritance,

Having no need to labour, only to possess the days,
Only to possess their power and their presence,

Smiling on the distance, their faces lit with the peace
Of the father’s will and testament,

Wearing flowers in their hair, decorating their limbs
With the agony of love and the agony of fear and the agony of death.

Hegyek (Hungarian)

Zümmögő légy vagyok, ha ezek nem kövek,
Ha ezek nem kövek, akkor ujjak -

Ujjak, vállak, szemek.
A levegő el-elsuhan fölöttük, mintha figyelemmel tartaná őket.

Ott vannak évek óta.
Meggazdagodva az örökségtől,

Nincsen szükségük munkára, csak a napok fölötti uralomra,
Csak erejük és jelenlétük birtoklására,

Megmosolyogva a nemlétet, arcuk
Az ősök elrendelésének és végakaratának békéjével ég.

Hajukba virágokat tűznek, s a halál, a félelem és a szerelem
Agóniájával díszítik végtagjaikat.
