Joyce, James: Chamber Music XXVII

Portre of Joyce, James

Chamber Music XXVII (English)

Though I thy Mithridates were

Framed to defy the poisondart,

Yet must thou fold me unaware

To know the rapture of thy heart

And I but render and confess

The malice of thy tenderness.

For elegant and antique phrase,

Dearest, my lips wax all too wise;

Nor have I known a love whose praise

Our piping poets solemnise,

Neither a low where may not be

Ever so little falsity.

Kamarazene XXVII (Hungarian)

Lennék bár Mithridatesed,

Kit a mérgezett nyíl se sért,

Úgy kell karodba rejtened,

Hogy érezzem szíved tüzét,

És elfeledjem, hogy hamis

Gyöngédséged sebezhet is.

Mert bölcsebb lettem, ajkamon

Szép, ódon szólam nem feszeng,

S olyan szerelem nincs, tudom,

Melyről költőcskék lantja zeng,

Sem szerelem olyan fehér,

Melyhez ily csöppnyi folt se fér.
