King, Henry: Sic Vita* (Sic Vita in Hungarian)

Portre of King, Henry
Portre of Ferencz Győző

Back to the translator

Sic Vita (English)

Like to the falling of a star,

Or as the flights of eagles are,

Or like the fresh spring's gaudy hue,

Or silver drops of morning dew,

Or like a wind that chafes the flood,

Or bubbles which on water stood:

Even such is man, whose borrowed light

Is straight called in, and paid to night.

The wind blows out, the bubbles dies,

The spring entombed in autumn lies,

The dew dries up, the star is shot,

The flight is past, and man forgot.

Sic Vita* (Hungarian)

Mint csillag, mely kihúny örökre;

vagy sasoknak nagyívü röpte;

vagy mint tarka színe tavasznak;

vagy ezüstös hajnali harmat;

vagy mint szél-korbácsolta víz;

vagy hullámokon csipke-dísz; —

az ember kölcsön fényben él,

s behajtja rajta már az éj.

Szél elhallgat; hullám eláll;

tavasz őszbe temetve vár;

harmat szárad; csillag lehull;

röp-ív leszáll; ember sehol.

*Ilyen az élet.
