Kipling, Rudyard: "Držím si šesť statočných sluhov..." ("I Keep Six Honest Serving Men ..." in Slovak)

Portre of Kipling, Rudyard

"I Keep Six Honest Serving Men ..." (English)

I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
I send them over land and sea,
I send them east and west;
But after they have worked for me,
I give them all a rest.
I let them rest from nine till five,
For I am busy then,
As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,
For they are hungry men.

But different folk have different views;
I know a person small —
She keeps ten million serving-men,
Who get no rest at all!
She sends’em abroad on her own affairs,
From the second she opens her eyes —
One million Hows, two million Wheres,
And seven million Whys!

"Držím si šesť statočných sluhov..." (Slovak)

Šesť statočných sluhov držím si
(Moja znalosť, oni ma naučili všetko);
Ich mená sú Čo a Prečo a Kedy
a Ako a Kde a Kto.
Pošlem ich po súši i po mori,
pošlem ich na východ i západ;
až potom, čo pre mňa pracovali,
si môžu pohov dať.
Od deviatej do piatej oddychujú,
pretože potom zaneprázdnený som,
denne tri stravy a čaj dostávajú,
aby netrpeli hladom.

Koľko rôznych ľudí, toľko obyčajov;
poznám osobu útlu —
drží desať miliónov sluhov,
oddych im vôbec nedožičí ani na chvíľu!
Vo svojich službách ich do cudziny pošle,
Od prvého okamihu sotva oči otvorí —
miliónkrát Ako, dva miliónkrát Kde,
a sedem miliónkrát Prečo vysloví!
