Livesay, Dorothy: Rögtönzés egy régi témára (Improvisations on an Old Theme in Hungarian)

Portre of Livesay, Dorothy

Improvisations on an Old Theme (English)

If I must go, let it be easy, slow
The curve complete, and a sure swerve
To the goal. Let it be slow and sweet
To know how leaf consumes its time
How petal sucks to the sun's heat
Or as old bones, settling into soil,
Eyes too remote for earth's light
Set on a solar circle whose bright
Business brims the universe.

Let me know well how the winds blow
Smoky in autumn with leaf reek;
And summer's sleek surrender,
Torching the maple; let my branches sigh
For snow, and in a muffled mantle, let me go.

Keep me for quiet. Save me ever from
Disastrous ending sounding without drum,
No decent exhalation of the breath -
The dazzling violence of atomic death.

Rögtönzés egy régi témára (Hungarian)

Ha mennem kell, könnyű legyen, komótos
A nagy kanyar, s biztos a lendület
A cél felé. Lassú s édes legyen
Tudni, idejét a lomb hogy emészti,
Hogy csüng a szirom a nap melegén,
Vagy mint talajba fészkelt öreg csontok,
A földi fénytől távoli szemek
Hogy állnak nap-pályára, mely kerek
Fény-szegélye a nyüzsgő Egyetemnek.

Tudjam meg, a szél merre lebben
Avar-illattól füstösen ősszel;
A nyár szelíd megadását,
Juhar-fáklyát; sóhajtson ajkam
Hóért, s keljek útra vattás köpenyben.

Őrizz meg a csendnek. Örökre ments meg
A szörnyű végtől, hol a dob se zenghet,
S nem tisztes sóhajban száll el a lélek -
Vakító atomhaláltól kímélj meg.
