Lowell, Robert: Dies Irae (Dies Irae in Hungarian)

Portre of Lowell, Robert

Dies Irae (English)

On this day of anger, when I am Satan’s,

forfeited to that childless sybarite –

Our God, he walks with me, he talks with me,

in sleep, in thunder, and in wind and weather;

he strips the wind and gravel from my words,

and speeds me naked on the single way…

You who save those you must save free; you, whose

least anger makes my faith derelict,

you came from nothing to the earth for me,

my enemies are many, my friends few –

how often do you find me, God, and die?

Once our lord looked and saw the world was good –

in His hand, God has got us in His hand;

everything points to non-existence except existence.

Dies Irae (Hungarian)

A harag e napján, mikor a Sátáné vagyok,

a gyermektelen szibarita konca –

a Mi Istenünk itt jár velem, beszél velem,

álmomban, mennydörgésben, szélben és időben;

szíjat hasít a szélből és torkomra forrasztja a szót

és meztelenül űz az egyetlen úton...

Te, aki megváltod a megváltásra szorulót; kinek

legmúlóbb haragja is bitanggá teszi hitem,

a semmiből jöttél a földre értem,

ellenségem számos, barátom kevés –

milyen gyakran találsz rám, Isten, s halsz értem halált?

Valaha odanézett a Mi Urunk s látta, hogy jó a világ –

kezében tartott minket Isten, a kezében;

a létet kivéve minden a nem-létre mutat.
