McGuckian, Medbh: Vágd (Chopping in Hungarian)

Portre of McGuckian, Medbh

Chopping (English)

Close your eyes
Unwinding the bitter onion –
Its layers of uncertainty are limited,
Under brown paper its sealed heart sings
To the tune of a hundred lemons.

Today I am feeling up to it:
I bend my throat aside –
There is no pain, only the soft entrances
Again, again, the vegetable's
Finely numbered bones.

Vágd (Hungarian)

Húnyt szemmel
Hántsd a keserű hagymát –
Elfogynak a tétova rétegek,
Barna papírbőr alatt a lepecsételt szív
Száz citrom dallamára énekel.

Ma menni fog:
Nyakam ferdítem –
Nem fáj, csak egy lágy nyisszanás,
Csak újra végigfut a növény
Finoman számlálódó csontjain.
