Pinto, Vivian De Sola: Piccadilly Circus (At Piccadilly Circus in Czech)

Portre of Pinto, Vivian De Sola

At Piccadilly Circus (English)

I wander through a crowd of women,
Whose hair and teeth are false,
Whose lips and cheeks have artificial colours,
Whose dress is artificial silk and velvet,
Whose talk is mainly lies.

And I remember
How once I dreamed of Truth:
It was a fair green tree,
Growing in an open grassy place
Beside cool flowing water…

They have cut down the tree.
Its sap dried up long ago.
Perhaps some fragment of it still remains
Embedded in an ugly garish building.

But most of it is turn’d to poisonous dust,
Blown through the stifling streets of slums.

Piccadilly Circus (Czech)

Bloudím a zevluji zástupem žen,
Jejichž vlasy a zuby jsou falešné,
Jejichž rty a tváře mají umělou barvu,
Jejichž šat je z umělého hedvábí a sametu,
Jejichž hovory jsou hlavně lži.

A vzpomínám si,
Kterak jsem jednou snil o Pravdě:
Zřel jsem ji jako krásný, zelený strom,
Rostoucí na travnatém, otevřeném místě,
Při chladné, tekoucí vodě…

Ten strom je poražen.
Jeho míza je dávno vyschlá.
Snad zlomek z něho dosud někde tkví,
Zasazen v přepjaté, ohyzdné budově.

Leč většinou se změnil v jedovatý prach,
Rozvátý po dusných uličkách čtvrtě chudých.
