Poe, Edgar Allan: Elizabeth (Elizabeth in Hungarian)

Portre of Poe, Edgar Allan

Elizabeth (English)

Elizabeth, it surely is most fit
[Logic and common usage so commanding]
In thy own book that first thy name be writ,
Zeno and other sages notwithstanding;
And I have other reasons for so doing
Besides my innate love of contradiction;
Each poet - if a poet - in pursuing
The muses thro' their bowers of Truth or Fiction,
Has studied very little of his part,
Read nothing, written less - in short's a fool
Endued with neither soul, nor sense, nor art,
Being ignorant of one important rule,
Employed in even the theses of the school-
Called - I forget the heathenish Greek name
[Called anything, its meaning is the same]
"Always write first things uppermost in the heart."

Elizabeth (Hungarian)

Elizabeth - illőbb mi sem lehetne
    (Logika s józan ész is így javallja):
Írjuk elsőül könyvedbe neved,
    Zénó s más bölcs bár így aligha vallja*
Az ellentmodás ördögén kívül, ki
    Bennem él, más jó ok is erre késztet:
Egy költő - hogyha költő -, míg hevülni
    Tud múzsáért, legyen Való vagy Képzet,
Habár a szerepére készületlen,
    Ritkán olvas vagy ír, tehát szamár,
Esze, lelke sincs, verse meg sületlen -
    Biz ő is tudja, mi a fő szabály,
Ezt az ó iskola is tudta már -
    Csak feledtem görög nevét - no de
Cégér nélkül is egy a lényege:
"Azt írd elsőül, mi első szívedben!"

*Zénónak, azaz Zenónnak tulajdonított híres mondás: "Az ember neve nem jelenhet meg saját művében."
