Wright, Judith: Finálé (Finale in Hungarian)

Portre of Wright, Judith

Finale (English)

The cruellest thing they did

was to send home his teeth from the hospital.

What could she do with those,

arriving as they did days after the funeral?

Wrapped them in one of his clean handkerchiefs

she'd laundered and taken down.

All she could do was cradle them in her hands;

they looked so strange, alone –

utterly jawless in a constant smile

not in the least like his. She could cry no more.

At midnight she took heart and aim and threw

them out the kitchen door.

It rocketed out, that finally-parted smile,

into the gully? the scrub? the neighbour's land?

And she went back and fell into stupid sleep,

knowing him dead at least, and by her hand.

Finálé (Hungarian)

A legnagyobb kegyetlenség az volt tőlük,

hogy hazaküldték a kórházból férje fogsorát.

Mit is kezdhetne most vele, hogy napokkal

a temetés után így felverték emléke porát?

Becsomagolta hát férje zsebkendőibe,

amiket előtte szépen elővett és elmosott.

Csak pólyálgatta egyre a kezében;

olyan magányos volt és elkopott –

ez az állkapocs nélküli, állandó mosoly

cseppet sem emlékeztetett rá. Már sírni sem tudott.

Éjfélkor erőt vett magán és kidobta

a konyhaajtón, de utána később sem futott.

Kirepült végre az a későn jött mosoly

a völgybe? az erdőbe? Repült, akár a madárdal.

Ekkor a szobába ment és ostoba álomba merült,

tudva, hogy nincs többé, és az ő keze által.
