Wylie, Elinor: Lelkemet irgalmas remény (Let no charitable hope in Hungarian)

Portre of Wylie, Elinor

Let no charitable hope (English)

Now let no charitable hope
Confuse my mind with images
Of eagle and of antelope:
I am in nature none of these.

I was, being human, born alone;
I am, being woman, hard beset;
I live by squeezing from a stone
The little nourishment I get.

In masks outrageous and austere
The years go by in single file;
But none has merited my fear,
And none has quite escaped my smile.

Lelkemet irgalmas remény (Hungarian)

Lelkemet irgalmas remény
Ne formálja sas, antilop
Képére többé, mert hisz én
Egyikre sem hasonlítok.

Ember vagyok: sorsom magány,
Asszony vagyok: kín fojtogat,
A kőből sajtolom silány,
Szegényes táplálékomat.

Vonul a szörnyű maszkabál,
Az évek sora monoton,
Félelmem egyiknek se jár,
S egy sem kerüli mosolyom.
