Visnapuu, Henrik: Christmas Eve (Jõuluöö in English)

Portre of Visnapuu, Henrik

Jõuluöö (Estonian)

Taevan särasid tähed. Polnud kuud.
Lumihärmätisen olid puud.
Oli külm, oli vaikne, oli õhtu.

Sõitsid kiriku vaikiden reed.
Tõusin kõrvalist tähtesse teed.
Olid jõulud, oli laupäev, oli õhtu.

Tõusten mäkke, nägin paistman tuld.
Suland lumest paistis havvana muld.
Oli külm, oli tuli, oli õhtu.

Tuli praksuden põles. Olin mäel.
Magas sündinu näitsiku käel.
Oli vaikne, olid jõulud, oli õhtu.

Olin imestet, tulbastin, olin tumm.
Mis näen, mõtlin olevat lumm.
Oli õudne, oli külm, oli õhtu.

Ütles kurblikul häälel ema suu:
"Magab. Poeg. Pole paika. Puudub muu!"
Säras täht ülepää, oli õhtu.

Ja ma kummardin käele, annin suud.
Hõbehärmätisen olid puud.
Oli neitsi, olid jõulud, oli õhtu.

Christmas Eve (English)

Stars glittering in the sky. The moon out of view.
Every tree adorned with silvery frost.
It was cold, it was peaceful, it was evening.

Sleighs drove to church through tranquil woods.
Mine was climbing a byway up the hill.
It was cold, it was Christmas, it was evening.

When I reached the summit I saw a light.
Where the snow had melted, the earth lay dark and bare.
It was cold, I saw a fire, it was evening.

The fire burned crackling, I lingered on the crest.
A new-born child slept on its mother's breast.
It was peaceful, it was Christmas, it was evening.

I trembled and fell silent.
What I thought I saw could only be a dream.
It was frightening, it was cold, it was evening.

Bending o'er her child the mother spoke:
"He is sleeping. We have no shelter. We're all alone."
A star shone brightly overhead. It was evening.

I bowed to her and kissed her hand.
The trees were covered with frost.
It was evening, it was Christmas, it was the Virgin.
