Holappa, Pentti: Cloud and sea (Pilvi ja meri in English)

Portre of Holappa, Pentti

Pilvi ja meri (Finnish)

Puhallan pilviä ilmaan enkä pilviä tarkoita.
Ne ovat sanoja. Miksi, oi miksi taivas
on valkoinen, miksi, oi miksi, kuu on sininen?

Tulet lähemmäksi ja loittonet samalla. Pilvi
ei merta edes kosketa, mutta meren yllä
se purjehtii ja on siis meren vankina.

En päästä sinua irti ahnaasta tajunnasta.
Voit vapautua vain minuun satamalla
- mutta miksi, o kiksi, sanat ovat pilviä?

Cloud and sea (English)

I puff clouds in the air and I don't mean clouds.
I mean words. Why, oh why is the sky white,
why, oh why is the moon blue?

You draw close and withdraw, all at once.
The cloud doesn't even touch the sea, but it's
sailing the sea, it's the sea's prisoner.

I'll not let you free from my greedy consciousness.
You can only be free by raining into me -
but why, oh why are the words clouds?
