Stenberg, Eira: Divina Commedia

Portre of Stenberg, Eira

Divina Commedia (Finnish)

Elämäni keskipäivän aikaan tieltä eksyneenä
suuren hotellin pitkässä käytävässä,
kun mattojen sordiino vaiensi askeleet
ja yökerhon parketti kutsui keinuun,

avasin ehkä väärän oven,
laskeuduin väärät portaat
käytävään josta en löytänyt ulos.

Kuin unessa kuljin
kaukainen musiikki oppaanani
niin kauan että väsyin
ja kaipasin vain huoneeseeni.

Silloin näin hänet,
yöportieerin tumman hahmon,
hänen hiustensa mustat korpinsiivet
tiiviisti päätä vasten,
kaksi ukkosensinistä silmää
ja töykeän häränpään.

Oi avainten herra, sanoin,
tässä palatsissa
huoneeni numero on 444.

Hän ei vastannut,
hän katseli rintojani ja laski sormensa niille,

hänen kätensä liukuivat pitkin vartaloni kaarta.

Näin minä kohtasin hänet
tuntematta häntä,
kukaan ei ole ottanut kasvojani kuin hän
poiminut korvani simpukkaa
ja vetäissyt hiuksista,
läpsäissyt jalkoväliin.
Liskot nostivat päänsä
pukuni sametin alla,
labyrintin ovet avautuivat.
En minä tiennyt kuka hän oli,
ettei ole toista kuin hän
joka kantaa päätään kuin mustaa kruunua.
Minä tartuin häntä ranteesta
ja talutin pois
ja nyt, hulluna halusta etsin häntä.

Divina Commedia (English)

In the middle of the noonday of my life
lost in a grand hotel's long corridor
where the carpet's sordino was silencing my footsteps
and the nightclub dance floor inviting me to swing,

I opened maybe the wrong door,
descended the wrong steps
into a corridot where I couldn't find the way out.

Walking in a sort of dream,
directed by distant music,
I went so far I grew faint,
only longing for my room.

Then I saw him,
the night porter's dark form,
black raven-wings of his hair
tight on his temples,
his two thunder-blue eyes
and churl's bullhead.

O master of the keys, I said,
in this palace
my room is 444.

He made no reply.
He looked at my breasts and touched them with

his fingers,

his hands slipped along the curve of my body.

That's how I met him
without knowing him:
no one's taken my face like that,
culled the mussel of my ear
and pulled my hair,
slapped the inside of my thighs.
Lizards raised their heads
under my dress's velvet,
the doors of the labyrinth opened.
I'd no idea who he was,
that no one but he
could carry his head like a black crown.
I grabbed him by the wrist
and led him away
and now, crazy with desire, I'm in search of him.
