Follain, Jean: L’Oeuf

Portre of Follain, Jean

L’Oeuf (French)

La vieille dame essuie un oeuf
avec son tablier d’usage
oeuf couleur ivoire et lourd
que nul ne lue revendique
puis elle regarde l’automne
par la petite lucarne
et c’est comme un tableau fin
aux dimensions d’une image
rien n’y est
hors de saison
et l’oeuf fragile
que dans sa paume elle tient
reste le seul objet neuf.

The Egg (English)

The old woman dried an egg
with her working apron
heavy egg the color of ivory
which nobody claims from her
then she looks at the autumn
through the little dormer
and it is like a fine painting
the size of a picture book
nothing is
out of season
and the fragile egg
that she holds in her palm
remains the one thing that is new.
