Un homme d’un certain âge
Plutôt jeune et plutôt vieux
Portant des yeux préoccupés
Et des lunettes sans couleur
Est assis au pied d’un mur
Au pied d’un mur en face d’un mur
 
Il dit je vais compter de un à cent
À cent ça sera fini
Une bonne fois une fois pour toutes
Je commence un deux et le reste
 
Mais à soixante-treize il ne sait plus bien
 
C’est comme quand on croyait compter les
coups de minuit
et qu’on arrive à onze
Il fait noir comment savoir
On essaye de reconstruire avec les espaces le rythme
Mais quand est-ce que ça a commencé
 
Et l’on attend la prochaine heure
 
Il dit allons il faut en finir
Recommençons une bonne fois
Une fois pour toutes
De un à cent
Un…

Behind pale spectacles
Is seated at the base of a wall

He says I am going to count from one to a hundred
At a hundred I will be done
One time once and for all
I begin one two and so on
 
But at seventy-three I forget how to do it
 
It's as if when counting the strokes of midnight
One arrived at eleven
And the knowhow suddenly blacked out
One tries to use spaces to reconstruct the rhythm
But when did one begin
 
And so one waits for the next hour
 
He says let's go it must get done
Let's start over one more time
Once and for all
From one to a hundred
