Jaccottet, Philippe: With Effort, I Sit up and Look Outside (Je me redresse avec effort in English)

Portre of Jaccottet, Philippe

Ce ciel qui me traverse me surprend.

With Effort, I Sit up and Look Outside (English)

With effort, I sit up and look outside:

you might say there are three lights.

Light in the heavens, light from there

that flows in me and fades,

light’s shadow that my hand is tracing on the page.

Shadow turns to ink.

Surprise runs through me like this sky.

We like to believe our torment

helps heaven show clear. But torment

overcomes those wistful flights, and pity

drowns all, shining with as many tears

as night.
