Biography

Born 1923 in Budapest. Novelist and short-story writer. Father a factory worker. On completion of gymnasium worked in tailoring industry and then as lathe operator. Employed as laborer in Western Europe 1945-1949 and as lathe operator in Budapest 1949-1956. His writings began to appear in periodicals in 1955. Awarded prize by Central Council of Hungarian Trade Unions for A hazudós in 1958 and Attila József Prize for Rozsdatemető, his most successful work so far, in 1963. The latter was presented as a play by Thália Színház in 1963.
A close viewer of workingman's life, a skillful portrayer of character. His writings have been described as bringing poetry to their subject matter through an amalgam of realism and romanticism.
