Ady Endre: To the great Whale (A nagy Cethalhoz in English)

A nagy Cethalhoz (Hungarian)

Óh, Istenünk, borzasztó Cethal,
Sorsunk mi lesz: ezer világnak?
Roppant hátadon táncolunk mi,
Óh, ne mozogj, síkos a hátad.

Csúszós a hátad, mellyel tartod
Lelkünket és a mindenséget
S én csak két rossz, táncoló lábat
S reszkető szívet adok néked.

Sok félelmemet vedd el értük,
Melyek velőimbe befújnak.
Mutasd meg, hogy nem vagy keresztyén,
Nem vagy zsidó: rettentő Úr vagy.

Végy engem hátad közepére,
Hogy két gyönge lábam megálljon,
Hogy a szívem ne verje mellem,
Hogy néha rám szálljon az álom.

Vagy dobj le egyszer s mindörökre,
Ne táncolj, lógj, ne tréfálj mindig.
Nem bírom s holt csillagaid már
Nyúgodt fényük arcomra hintik.

To the great Whale (English)

Oh God, dread Whale, what fate awaits us?
A thousand worlds await deciding.
Upon your back we dance and dance, but…
Oh, do be still, save us from sliding.

Slippery is your back, it holds us,
Our souls, the cosmos: all creation,
Poor dancing feet and trembling heart are
My only gifts, my poor oblation.

For these, as favour, take my legion
Fears from my marrow, which devour,
And show that you are neither Christian,
Nor Jew, but dreaded Lord of power.

Put me safely, squarely on your back,
So, that my two weak legs may be stilled,
So, that my heart may not beat my breast,
And some of my nights have dreams instilled.

Or throw me off for now and always;
You joke and dance for too long a time,
‘Tis hard to bear, and all your dead stars
Shed peaceful light on this face of mine.
