Ady Endre: You listen to my sick heart (Beteg szívemet hallgatod in English)

Portre of Ady Endre
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Beteg szívemet hallgatod (Hungarian)

Téged keresve útján, harcán,

Milyen bátor, erős szivem volt,

Milyen muzsikás, milyen harsány.

Milyen beteg most, milyen vásott:

Dobbanását nem tartja más, csak

Te nagy, szerelmes akarásod.

Ha még egyszer vadul fölzengne,

Himnusza a kíné s a kéjé,

Himnusza a himnuszod lenne.

Himnusz, hogy mégis rád találtam,

Nagy vétkekkel, nagy kerülőkkel,

De élve és nem a halálban.

S mindent megér, ha csak egy óra

Dalolta el dalát melletted

S nem nyílhat a szám átok-szóra.

Beteg szívvel, istenes ember,

Vallok neked, ím, kicsi párom,

Áhitatos, bús szerelemmel:

Ne hallgasd rossz, beteg zenéjét,

Jó a szivem, mert benne vagy te

S sziveink az órákat éljék.

You listen to my sick heart (English)

Looking for you on byways, in war,

What a game heart I had, how strong!

How rousing its music was before.

Now a boorish thing that ailments fill:

Nothing ensures, prolongs its beating,

But your great, loving, enormous will.

If its hymn would ring out once again...

Surely, it would be a hymn to you:

A hymn of pleasure, a hymn of pain.

And finding you: a hymn, if you will,

Great sins and detours along the way,

But not in death, for I’m living still.

If but an hour its song had sung…

that could have been worth a lot for me

by curbing my ever-cursing tongue.

I, God-fearing man, my heart a mess,

With sad, awful love, my little mate,

Give to you a warning and profess:

Don't hear its music: it devours,

My heart is good because you're in it,

So, let our hearts live all the hours.
