Ady Endre: My thanks to Thee (Köszönöm, köszönöm, köszönöm in English)

Portre of Ady Endre

Back to the translator

Köszönöm, köszönöm, köszönöm (Hungarian)

Napsugarak zúgása, amit hallok,

Számban nevednek jó íze van,

Szent mennydörgést néz a két szemem,

Istenem, istenem, istenem,

Zavart lelkem tegnap mindent bevallott:

Te voltál mindig mindenben minden,

Boldog szimatolásaimban,

Gyöngéd simogatásaimban

S éles, szomoru nézéseimben.

Ma köszönöm, hogy te voltál ott,

Hol éreztem az életemet

S hol dőltek, épültek az oltárok.

Köszönöm az énértem vetett ágyat,

Köszönöm neked az első sirást,

Köszönöm tört szivü édesanyámat,

Fiatalságomat és bűneimet,

Köszönöm a kétséget, a hitet,

A csókot és a betegséget.

Köszönöm, hogy nem tartozok senkinek

Másnak, csupán néked, mindenért néked.

Napsugarak zúgása, amit hallok,

Számban nevednek jó íze van,

Szent mennydörgést néz a két szemem,

Istenem, istenem, istenem,

Könnyebb a lelkem, hogy most látván vallott,

Hogy te voltál élet, bú, csók, öröm

S hogy te leszel a halál, köszönöm.

My thanks to Thee (English)

It is the hum of sunbeams that I hear,

Thy name is tasting sweet within my mouth

And my eyes, oh Lord, oh God of mine,

behold the holy thunder.

My troubled soul admitted yesterday

That Thou wert always all in everything:

In my joy when following a scent,

In each and every gentle, fond caress

And in my piercing, doleful glances.

I give Thee thanks today for being

In every place where I had felt my life,

Where altars fell and where they were erected

I thank Thee for the bed made up for my sake,

I thank Thee for the first time I had cried,

I thank Thee for my broken-hearted mother,

For my youth and for my failings,

I thank Thee for my doubts and for the faith,

For kisses and for my infirmity.

I thank Thee that I owe nothing to no one

But Thee alone, I owe it all to Thee.

It is the hum of sunbeams that I hear,

Thy name is tasting sweet within my mouth

And my eyes, oh Lord, oh God of mine,

Behold the holy thunder.

Light is my soul for having seen, professed,

That Thou wert life, sorrow, kisses, joy to me,

And wilt be death: for these my thanks to Thee.
