Balla Zsófia: The Rose (A rózsa in English)

Portre of Balla Zsófia

A rózsa (Hungarian)

I.
Mint kagyló nyílik szét a sok szirom,
a sűrű tő mutatja meg magát:
külön-külön sötét háromszögek
sorjáznak mind szűkülőbb körökben –
vagy fordítva: tágul a kör, kihorgad?
Az örvénylő sziromalakzatok
körbefogják gyöngéden azt, amit
a feslő rózsa rejteget, a telt,
szoros középet.

Ez az, ami nem nyílik sosem,
a többiek miatt, kik összenyomják
akaratlan.
    Nem tudjuk meg soha,
hogy mit mutatna még beljebb, hogy ez
a bimbónyi zártság mért fontos neki:
szirmok tiporják, míg körülveszik.

A rózsa mélyén egy másik rózsa áll.

II.
E rózsa itt van még az asztalon,
de félő, hogy lekókkad, hogy kidől
holnap vagy ma, elhervad, hiszen
nyitott egészen s széjjel úgy mered,
akár a fönnakadt szem.
      Áll s külön-külön
terpeszti szirmát, szárát, levelét,
és most, hogy elnyílt, hogy közel a vég:
szemem tarolja, szípja nagy mohón:
hogy lássam akkor is, ha már kihúnyt;
pillantásom a fondor hajlatot
elválasztja, beméri, rátapad,
s tapogatja a zárt közt, belsejét,
a szirmok állagát, a lepkepúderes
csöndüreg szinét, hevét,
a föltartott fejet.

      De jaj!
Arcom hiába süttetem vele,
hogyha ellobban! Mert csak Ő, csak Ő
tölt el gyönyörrel! És sem kép, se más,
sem híre, nem! Hiába mondom el
a mézszín rózsát, ahogy itt dereng
magában, mint a lámpa, s hogy suhog
a vaníliaízű, sűrü szél –

Ameddig itt van -most! – látványát idd tövig.

Mit ér, hogy örökkévaló, ha már nem él?

The Rose (English)

I.
Like shells, the many petals open,
the denseness of the stem reveals itself:
dark deltas stand
in circles that decrease -
or wrong way round? Increase? Expand?
The swirl of petal shapes
encircle gently that which
the shedding rose attempts to hide:
its centre, full and tight.

This is what never opens,
because the rest unwillingly squeeze it,
 crowd it in.
   We shall never know
what its depth could still reveal and why
this bud's worth of closeness matters to it so much:
the petal circle tramples what it guards.

Another rose rises in a rose's depths

II.
This rose is still on the table,
but - fearful thought - tomorrow or today,
it might droop, come down, for it is fully open
and stares about itself,
like an eye rolled back.
   It’s upright and it spreads
its petals, stem and leaves,
and now that it had bloomed, nearing the end,
my eyes harvest it, suck it eagerly, so
I may keep seeing it once it fades away;
my glance separates, divides that canny curve,
it measures, adheres to, feels the space enclosed,
the innards, stuff of the petals,
the colour of that butterfly-dusted silent cavity,
its warmth,
head held erect.

   But woe!
Should that flame go out,
in vain would I let it warm my face!
For it and it alone fills me with pleasure!
And neither its likeness, nor words about it, nor anything else!
In vain would I describe this honey-coloured rose
and how it sheds twilight like a lamp, or the rustling
of a dense, vanilla-flavoured wind -

Whilst it's still here - now! - drink in the scene, drink every drop.

What matters, that it's eternal, once it no longer lives?
