Balla Zsófia: A decade later (Tíz év után in English)

Portre of Balla Zsófia
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Tíz év után (Hungarian)

Most, hogy nem vagy, megsokszorozlak.

Szemem sós szilánkjain

úgy mutatkozol, mint őskori teremtmény.

Pedig valaha úgy olvastalak,

akár Isten első betűjét.

Hajnali ösztön térképét követve

testünk a tengerekhez ért.

Nem porlott még hullámra és homokra,

hajónk nem volt fahulladék.

Más-világunkban az ég folytatódott.

Medveárnyas erdőkben

szerettük egymást.

És most itt lépdelek az emlékek jegén.

Úgy gondolok rád, mint a földre, ahonnan elhajóztam.

A vad hajtásra, amelyet

beillesztettek a rendszertanokba.

Hosszú részegségem imbolygó lámpája vagy.

Jeges földön lépdelek, nézem, hová temettelek.

Látom, mennyire végleges, ami lehetetlen.

Véges vagyok. Mért volna végleges

amit gondolok vagy cselekszem?

Miképpen eshetnék mindörökre túl

a nehezén, az elhajtott szerelmen?

Milyen kemény reteszt nyit, mint a vasfű,

később egy véletlen találkozás!

Az ész eldugott, hátsó traktusában

le-föl jár a cseléd remény.

Harangot húznak, hogy múljon az aszály.

Szalmabábut égetnek, hogy szűnjön a tél.

Álom fonákján így hihettem én is,

hogy életre kel, akit eltemettem:

azért hal meg, hogy egyszer visszakapjam.

Hogy a föld színén, mint fűszál, búvópatak

kibukkan Perszephóné s dermedt februárban

megint a felvilágra pattan.

Öröm csak hullócsillagok

kondenzcsíkjában füstölög.

Öröklét csak a veszteségben él.

Sosem érik egésszé, aki fél.

Ahogy tóra inni hajlik az éj,

úgy hűlt rám, mint a szenvedély

a magány.

Hideg bőre most felszakad.

Az égre szállok -

Hold vagyok, szabad!

Az egyedüllét egészen enyém.

A múlt nem vonszol már magával,

félelmeimhez enged:

fölöttem villog százezer szilánkban.

Kő vagyok. Vágy nélkül emlékezem.

A decade later (English)

I make more of you, now that you are no longer.

You appear as a primordial creature

on the salty splinters of my eye.

And yet I used to read you,

like God's first written words in former times.

Following the map of sunrise instinct,

our body reached the oceans.

It did not crumble to wave and sand yet

the wood of our ship was sound.

The skies continued In our other-world.

We loved each other

in bear-shadowed forests.

And now I stride along on the ice of memories.

I think of you, as of the land from which I sailed.

As the wilding shoot

that made the taxonomies.

You are the flickering light of my long intoxication.

I'm striding along the frozen ground, look at the place I buried you.

I see how final impossible can be.

I am finite. Why would

my thoughts and actions not be final?

How could I forever loose

this heavy burden, the love driven away?

A chance meeting later, like verbena,

what a hard bolt it opens!

The servant wish moves to and fro

within the hidden rear wing of the mind.

They ring a bell to put an end to draught.

They burn a straw man to make the winter pass.

Senselessly dreaming, I, too, must have believed,

that he, whom I buried, will come to life:

that he has died, so I could have him back.

That from the earth, like grass, an underground stream,

Persephone will surface and, in a February frost,

rebound into the upper world.

Joy smoulders only

in the contrails of falling stars.

Eternity exists only in attrition.

The fearful never mature to wholeness.

As night bends toward the lake to drink,

so it befell me, solitude

is like a passion.

Its cold hide ruptures.

I fly onto the sky -

I am the moon, free!

Loneliness is mine entirely.

The past no longer drags me,

it lets me join my fears:

it flashes above me in a hundred thousand shards.

I am a stone. Without desire, I do remember.
