Baranyi Ferenc: Both manfully (Mindkettő emberül in English)

Mindkettő emberül (Hungarian)

Szeretlek. Tőlem el ne várd
szokott módját a széptevésnek,
téged aláznának meg a
bókká butított esküvések,
mért mondjam: csodaszép a szád,
mikor csak oly szép, mint az átlag,
te is tudod: az úgyse vagy,
akinek vágyra gyúlva látlak.
Egérfogáshoz épp elég
egy csöpp szalonna - macska sem kell,
cincogó lányokat szokás
lábról levenni közhelyekkel,
az ő receptjük ismerős:
célzás ruhára, hajra, gyengéd
figyelmességek közt nehány
jól időzített szemtelenség -
ez csapda csak s nem taktika,
nem bámulat, de szánalom kél
az áldozat iránt, kiért
fölös hűhó a macskafortély,
mikor csak bársony bőrödért,
s csodás ívű szádért dícsérlek:
arcod ne fesse hálapír,
Inkább haragpiros önérzet.
Tedd, hogy remek melled mögött
bonyolult szívedig találjak,
s ha szíved méltónak ítél,
fizesse értem meg az árat,
nászunk legyen ellenfelek
vívás utáni kézfogása,
egymás próbáját miután
mindkettő emberül kiállta,
amikor már nem érdekes
ki nyert, vesztett, hol több a sebfolt,

amikor csak egy lelkesít:
kettőnkhöz méltó küzdelem volt.

Both manfully (English)

I love you. Do not expect
the usual forms of flattery from me,
sworn statements dulled to compliments
would only debase you,
why should I say that your lips are beautiful,
when they are not nicer than the norm,
you know as well that you are not
the way I see you when I burn with desire.
To catch a mouse a tiny piece of bacon
will suffice - no need for a cat,
the use of platitudes is customary
for winning giggling girls over,
the recipe for them is familiar:
hints at clothing, hair,
some well-timed insolence
among tender attentions -
that is only a snare, not a tactic,
that is not admiration
but pity towards the victim,
for whom a cat's ruse would be overkill,
let not a grateful blush colour your cheeks
when I praise you only for your velvet skin
and the wondrous arc of your lips,
let it be the angry red of self-esteem.
Let me strike your complex heart
beneath your splendid bosom,
and if your heart deems me worthy,
let it pay the price for me,
let our nuptial be the handshake
of adversaries after the sword-play,
after we both manfully stood the test,
and when it no longer is of interest
who won, who lost,
who received more wounds,

when but one aspect stirs the soul:
the battle was worthy of both of us.
