Bari Károly: Night (Éjszaka in English)

Portre of Bari Károly

Éjszaka (Hungarian)

Álmok porfelhőiben jajgatnak az
emberek; rettenetes suhogással szállnak
a mezők fölé, élesre-töltött kapájuk
megcsikordul a földben: csontok,
felébrednek,
valahol elsüllyedt a hold egy felhő-ingoványban,
holnapra úgyis előkaparja magának az éjszaka,
fehérre meszelt házak csordája legel az útszélen,
ablak-fogaikkal csillagot harapnak,
torkuk mélyén csönddé-fagyott szeretet várja
a virradatot

Night (English)

Men wail in the dust clouds of dreams;
fly with dreadful whirring sound
above the meadows, their armed hoes
squeak in the soil: bones
come awake,
the moon sank somewhere in a morass of clouds,
no matter, tomorrow's night will scrape it back again,
a herd of white-washed houses grazes by the roadside,
with window-teeth they bite the stars,
in the depths of their throats, love, frozen into silence,
awaits the dawn.
