Bella István: Silence (Csönd in English)

Portre of Bella István
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Csönd (Hungarian)

És majd besüpped az ég,
megroskad, összetöpped,
s mint elhagyott sírokon,
elgazosodik a földön az éj.
Csönd lesz, és mégsem lesz csönd ez,
mert nem lesz, mi mérje a csöndet,
csak zajtalan némaság, arcbafagyott lehelet, csönd.
Hol lesz akkor barátom a porhadt
temetők nyugalma, lesz-e ember,
síró nénike a fák közt, mekegő
kikötött kecske, béklyózott bárány a fűben?
Lesznek-e méhek?
Lesz-e még valaki – ember – ki a bomlást
elmúlássá szelídíti?

Csak csönd lesz, csönd, s a csöndben

Döglegyek, keselyűk, hollók
– zajtalan keringő bolygók –
a Föld felett.

Silence (English)

And then the sky will
sink in, slump, shrivel,
and, as on abandoned graves,
the night will spread like weed.
There will be silence, yet not silence that,
because there will be no comparisons,
only noiseless muteness, breath frozen to face, silence.
Where, friend, will the mouldering graveyards'
peaceful stillness be, will there be man,
a weeping little old woman among the trees,  bleating
tethered goats, shackled sheep in the grass?
Will there be bees?
Will there be someone - a man - who tames
rotting into passing?

There will be stillness only, and, in that stillness

Blowflies, vultures, ravens
- noiselessly rotating planets -
above the Earth.
