Beney Zsuzsa: I stand (Állok… in English)

Portre of Beney Zsuzsa

Állok… (Hungarian)

Állok a nyitott ajtóban, hideg
árad be, érdes ég, már évek óta
a legutolsónak hitt őszi éj.
A legutolsónak hitt búcsúzás.

A szél köd és felhőtorlaszokat
emel a csillagok elé. Sötét van,
de fehér és szürke és köd-sötét.
Úgy mint a régi képeken a lelkek

mozdul, forog, örvénylik ami van..
Isten, ha vagy, mért nem gyujtasz világot?
Isten, ha lennél, nem hagynál magamra
ezen az első téli éjszakán.

I stand (English)

I stand in the open doorway, the cold
oozes in, the sky is rough, for years now,
this autumn night was thought to be the last.
This farewell was thought to be the last.

The wind brings mist and cloudbanks
that hide the stars. It's dark, but white
and grey and misty dark.
All's stirring, twisting, swirling…

as souls are in old paintings.
God, if you do exist, why not provide a flare?
God, if you did, you would not leave me here,
alone, on this first winter night.
