Beney Zsuzsa: The silence (A csend in English)

Portre of Beney Zsuzsa

A csend (Hungarian)

Még hallatszott a csend. Még milliónyi
szárny és fűrezzenés, a levegő
kristályai egymáson-zizegése.
alvók lélegzete, az álmodók

úszó szárnyalása vagy zuhanása.
Az éjszaka bársonysötét zenéje,
süllyedése a porhanyós anyagba
magába fogadni a hangokat.

Csak a haldokló test elhallgatása
némítja végleg el a dermedő világot.
Nem a befagyott tenger -- ő, aki
nem mondhatja ki többé a szót: tenger, vagy Isten.

The silence (English)

Silence could still be heard. The million
rustles of wing or grass, the swishing sound
of air crystals rubbing each on each,
the breath of those asleep, the dreamers

swimming on the wing or falling.
The velvet-dark music of the night,
its sinking in the substance of the dust
to receive and hold the sound.

Only the dying body’s sudden stillness
gives final silence to the stiffening world.
Not ice-bound seas, but - he,
who never more can say the word: "sea". Or "God".
