Beney Zsuzsa: Tree (A fa in English)

A fa (Hungarian)

Minden évben meghal, megszületik,
de létezése nem hal meg a télben.
És mégis halandó: ág-koronáját
egyszer majd széttöredezi a szél

mely még sehol sincs. Törzsét széthasítja
egy villám, mely még alszik az időben.
Ahogy elmúlása a létezésben,
ahogy őbenne a tél és tavasz

lüktetése. Ahogy önmaga tudása a csend
teljességében. Több mint a szavak
hálóján áthulló levelek surrogása.
Nem időben gyökerező teremtmény.

Tree (English)

Each year it dies, is born again,
but its existence does not pass in winter.
Yet, it is mortal: its crown of branches
will someday be shredded by a gust,

which, as yet, is nowhere. Its trunk will be
split by a bolt of lightning still asleep in time.
As is its demise in existence, as are
in it the throbbing of winter and of spring.

As is its self-knowledge in the wholeness
of silence. More than mere rustling of leaves
falling through the net of words.
Not a creature rooted in time.
