Beney Zsuzsa: On tip-toe (Lábujjhegyen in English)

Portre of Beney Zsuzsa

Back to the translator

Lábujjhegyen (Hungarian)

Csöndesen, lábujjhegyen menni el.
És előtte hallgatni. Nem utólszor
hanem most látni először a földet,
a borszínű tenger hullámait.

A hajókürtre meg sem rezzenni. Beállni
a sor végére, mint abba a sorba.
Lassan araszolni át az idő
maradékán, már súlytalan teherrel.

Tudni: ez az egyetlen feladat
amely még vár, ez az egyetlenegy
amit teljesítened kell, hogy majd szabad légy.
Egyetlen, amit nem te teljesítsz.

On tip-toe (English)

To leave quietly, leave on tip-toe.
To be silent before it.  To see the earth,
the waves of the wine-coloured sea,
not for the last, but the first time.

To not even stir to the blast of the ships horn.
To stand at the end of the queue: that queue.
To slowly inch through the remaining time
with a load now weightless.

To know: this is the only task
which is yet to come, the only one
you must perform to gain your freedom.
The only one which is not performed by you.
