Beney Zsuzsa: The way of Orpheus (Orpheus útja in English)

Orpheus útja (Hungarian)

Azzal, hogy átlépett, megszűnt a tér.
Függőleges lappá lettek a lépcsők.
Maga anyaggá a sötét anyagba
olvadva, de tovább is önmaga.
Egyszerre rész és egész a halottak
testéből sárrá taposott agyagban.

A Föld tömörebb, mint mikor csak látta
és sűrűbb. Nem ereszti át a fényt.
Rétegei egymásba préselődnek
felszín a felszínen, de láthatatlan
földpát-lapokból lett amorf göröngyök.
A tér a látás. Talán a besüppedt
szem csarnokában apadt el a víz
vagy a fény égette el önmagát?
Vagy valóban anyaggá lett a lélek?

A folyó kiszáradt, az árnyak útja
eltömődött, ő, aki ott feküdt
sírjában mint egy képzelt nászi ágyban
szétbomlott. Nem volt megfordulni hely.
Talán egy villanás, egy metafora
majd a képek nélküli létezés.

Férfiként indult a szorosba érte.

The way of Orpheus (English)

Once he crossed over, space had ceased to be.
The stairs became a sheet of vertical.
He turned to clay, merged with dark matter
and yet remained himself.
Both part and whole within that clay
trampled to mud from bodies of the dead.

The Earth is more solid than when he'd merely seen it,
denser. It affords no passage to the light.
Its layers pressing, each into each,
surface on surface, but are invisible
feldspar sheets that formed the shapeless clods.
Space is vision. Perhaps the water dried up
within the portico of sunken eyes,
or has the light consumed itself?
Or did the soul really turn to matter?

The river dried up, the way of shadows
had turned to hard pan, he, who lay there
in his grave, as on an imagined marriage bed,
decomposed.  There was no room to turn.
Perhaps a flash, a metaphor,
and then existence without images.

As a man, he started off for her, entered the narrows.
Then his body vanished, then his soul.
He sought himself within the empty looking glass.

As mist or smoke adheres no nothing,
as curling steam disperses from the soup:
to love the dead: a floating spider line.

When he glanced back, it was not
nothingness he saw. By then he saw nothing.
He knew not: Orpheus or Eurydice?
