Beney Zsuzsa: Darkness (Sötétség in English)

Portre of Beney Zsuzsa

Sötétség (Hungarian)

Újra vakhomályban, újra a láp
határövezetében, mintha én magam
lennék az aki nincs. Nyújtott karokkal
próbálom kikerülni a fatörzsek

ütését, az alacsony ágakat,
lábam csúsztatva síkos agyagon
a gödröket, sárral kevert vizet
melyben, ha elesem, megfulladok.

A hitetlenség holtvidéke ez.
Mégis: a láthatatlan csillanásért,
a reményért reménytelen magam
mélyén megkísértem a kút vizét is.

Darkness (English)

Again in a blind haze, again in places
bordering the marsh, as if I were the one
who doesn’t exist.  Arms outstretched,
I try to avoid hitting the trunks

of trees, low-growing branches,
with sliding feet on slippery clay,
the pits, water mixed with mud
in which, if I fell, I'd drown.

This is the dead land of unbelief.
And yet, for that invisible gleam, for hope
in the depths of my hopeless self,
I even tempt the waters of the well.
