Cseke Gábor: Joys (Örömök in English)

Portre of Cseke Gábor
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Örömök (Hungarian)

vidám leveled lobogtatja a postás

becsiccsentett az egész napi járkálás közben
nem tudja mit rejt a hetedhétországot bejárt
hosszúkás kecses boríték
de hiányos fogsorát mutatva vigyorog
tudja amit tud
kacsint

vele ujjong a szívem
micsoda örömök
amikor sírni kellene
olvasom olvasom
és mindent elhiszek az utolsó szóig
pedig a szavak
hát a szavak
éppen ők
a vidámságot színlelők
konganak

mit váratlanul felrúgunk
üres mosdótál
az ágy alatt

Joys (English)

the postman waves your cheerful letter at you

he got a bit primed during his day-long walk
and doesn't know what the graceful narrow envelope
from the lands beyond is hiding
but gives a gap-toothed grin
as one who knows what he knows
and winks

my heart exults with him
what joys
when one ought to cry
I read and read
and believe it all to the last word
although the words
well the words
especially those
feigning joviality
sound hollow

something we unexpectedly kick over
an empty wash-dish
beneath the bed
