Csokonai Vitéz Mihály: Még egyszer Lillához

Portre of Csokonai Vitéz Mihály

Még egyszer Lillához (Hungarian)

Én szenvedek, s pedig miattad,
Miolta szívem elragadtad,
Édes kegyetlenem!
El-elhalok, mihelyt te jutsz eszembe,
S így kell talán e gyötrelembe
Örökre sínlenem.

Érted borong éltem tavassza.
Mert nincs nap, amely elfogyassza
A rám vonúlt ködöt.
Sír tisztelőd, ha kél, ha fekszik,
Miolta azzal nem dicsekszik,
Kiben gyönyörködött.

Sír tisztelőd, kétségbe esvén,
Miolta, tőled távol esvén,
Reményje füstbe szállt;
Holt álom űl zsibbadt ölében,
S gyakran ijesztő képzetében
Lilit, Lilit kiált.

E szóra karjaim kinyúlnak,
De csak sovány homályba húllnak
Nincs Lilla, nincs öröm!
Már nyugtom éjjel sem találom,
Mert ott is ébren tart az álom,
S fejem Lilin töröm. -

Óh, mely keserves annak élni,
Kinek tovább nincs mit remélni,
És mégis élni kell!
Él az, de nincsen benne lélek.
Az én tüdőm is, bátor élek,
Lelketlenűl lehell.

És tán te, szép szememvilága!
Úgy élsz, hogy életed virága
Virít, míg én halok.
Adná az ég! Azon örűlnék.
Könnyemnek azzal eltörűlnék
Felét az angyalok.

De tán, Lilim! te is kesergesz?
Rab gerlicém, saskézbe hergesz
S kéred segédemet?
Hiába már, kincsem, hiába!
Csak a halál jégsátorába
Ölelsz meg engemet.

Once more to Lilla (English)

Surely, I suffer on your account
ever since you have stolen my heart,
my sweet and cruel one!
I die again and again without
any relief from memory's smart
for good I am undone.

The spring of my life broods over you
for there's no sunshine to drive away
the fog that sits on me.
Morning or night, without much ado,
I cry, because I cannot display
what fed my ecstasy.

Your admirer weeps in despair
ever since he was separated
from you; hopes gone like steam-
a dream that has died weighs down my lair
often I cry, feel decimated,
"Lily, Lily!" - I scream.

My arms reach out when I sound this word
but all they touch is skeletal dusk:
Lilla, there's no joy left!
Nights bring no rest for I thought I heard
your lovely name, so sleepless, I must
day-dream, of you bereft.

O, bitter is the life of him, who
has lost all reason to be hoping
and yet is forced to live!
Although he may live, his soul withdrew;
behold my lungs lifelessly breathing
life's breath they cannot give.

And what of you, my radiant flower?
Does your life's flare the darkness banish
while languishing I die?
Could but the Lord grant you the power
to thrive - my tears would dry and vanish -
through Angels from the sky.

But p'rhaps you too are sad and anguished
a captive dove, by an eagle caught,
calling for me to come -
It's too late... With all hope extinguished
in Death's ice-hut shall we two be brought
to hug in final sum.
