A vén cirkuszosné monológja (Hungarian)

Maradt nekem apai örökségből
egy kocsi két ló meg a medve
mit csinálhattam volna egyedül
járván falusi vásártereket
s öregedve medve meg én is
maradtam inkább a családdal
tudtam egy kígyószámot fényes
testemre simuló trikóban
ki-be bujkáltam önmagamból
Békésben jártunk amikor
leszerződött hozzánk a férjem
kapott egy fél kocsit tíz pengőt
s tányérozhatott a szünetben
zsonglőr volt de ki tudja honnan
szerzett huszonnégy bajonettet
s megtanulta a késdobálást
kilenc táblát vagdalt szilánkká
mire a derekam beadtam
s ettől kezdve csak felém vágta
vészt suhogtató késeit
négy gyerekem született tőle
közülük három egy csoport
humoros excentrikusok
a negyedikből világszám lett
a Barnum nagy attrakciója
ő küldte az ötezer dollárt
amiből megvettem a cirkuszt
s nyakamba szakadt minden gondja
tört az árboc szakadt a ponyva
üvöltött a sok éhes állat
meg a sok artistaporonty
etettem őket és ruháztam
embert faragtam mindegyikből
bűvészt bohócot idomítót
s ma azt sem tudom merre járnak
öreg vagyok csak álmaimban
látom a cirkuszt régi fényben
ívlámpáit piros manézsát
hallom a dobot dübörögni
s újra a tábla elé állok
záporoznak felém a kések
míg el nem vágják életem
vagy amíg fölébreszt a hajnal
egyhangú szürke neszezéssel

Monologue of the old circus proprietress (English)

I inherited from father
a wagon two horses and a bear
what else to do on my own
going to village markets
and me and the bear getting older
I sooner stayed with my folks
had a snake act
in a shiny body stocking
was slipping in and out of myself
we were at Békés when
my husband signed up with us
he got half a wagon and ten bucks
and could take a plate round at the break
was a juggler who knows from where
he got twenty-four bayonets
and learned knife throwing
nine target boards he shredded
before at last I agreed
and after that he threw
his danger-swishing knives towards me only
had four kids by him
three of them are a troupe
humorous eccentrics
the fourth became a world act
the big attraction at Barnum's
he sent the five thousand dollars
that let me buy the circus
and all its worries landed on me
the mast broke the canvas tore
all the hungry animals roared
the performers' tads as well
I fed and clothed them
made a someone out of each
magician clown trainer
I no longer know where they are
am old and only in my dreams
do I see the circus in the old light
its arc-lamps its red ring
hear the roll of the drum
and me standing in front of the board
shower of knives coming towards me
till they cut my life apart
or 'til I'm woken up
by the monotonous grey clatter of the dawn
