Garai Gábor: Trust (Bizalom in English)

Bizalom (Hungarian)

De csöndes szóval eltűnődve mondom:
bizalmam sarkig kitárult kapu,
nem verhet rá lakatot a gyanú;
ki-bejár rajta bárki szabadon.
Egy besurrant csaló tiszteletére
nem állítok őrséget tíz igaznak!

Kit tegnap itt gyöngeség bemocskolt,
megtisztálkodva megint betérhet újból;
ki kétélű késsel jött ide ma,
köszönthet holnap tiszta öleléssel!

Nem, nem a langy irgalmat hirdetem.
Nem hirdetek bocsánatot rossznak,
kegyelmet a hazugnak,
nem tudok
mentséget a könnyes képmutatásra,
s az öngyilkos szenvelgést gyűlölöm,
akár a nyers önzés orvtámadását.

De hirdetem, hogy bűneink mulandók!
Mint mamut és az ősgyík, a múltba
porlad a gyűlölet és a gyanakvás;
dühünk lehűl,
csak szerelmünk örök.
S halandó gyarlóságai között
csupán maga az ember halhatatlan.
Kérlelhetetlen gyötrelmei ellen
irgalmas vára bizalomból épül;
s az önmagával vívott küzdelemben
csak jósága szolgálhat menedékül.

Trust (English)

Should I be let down a hundred times, and disappointed
a thousand times by those for whom
I unveiled my heart as a slumbering rose,
should the very man betray me who I saved
risking my life,
should my own son
deny me,
and if not for thirty pieces of silver,
but for one paltry copper I’m sold
by my friends,
should I have no more to hope for,
should my failures get me on my knees
and I already would damn the day of my birth,
should gratitude only swell revenge
in my friends,
should I be surrounded by slanders, -
not even then will I say it isn’t worth!

Not even then will I say it isn’t worth
trusting people, not even then will I say
I can live on my own, in desolate
loneliness, because life is ruthless. -

But with silent words I say musing,
my trust is a gate thrown wide open,
suspicion can’t ever padlock it up,
anyone can walk in and out freely.
For one sneak-cheater I will never
set guards on ten good honest people.

Who was besmirched yesterday by frailty,
being clean again can come round today,
who came here today with a double-edged knife,
can greet me tomorrow with pure embrace!

No, I never stand for tepid mercy.
I never mean to forgive what’s bad,
to pardon liars,
I have no
excuse for tearful hypocrisy,
and I hate self-destroying mannerism
just like underhand ways of coarse selfishness.

But I do mean that our sins are not lasting!
Like mammoths and iguanodons, hatred
and suspicion will moulder into past,
our anger cools down,
only our love is eternal.
In the midst of their mortal frailties
only humans themselves are immortal.
Against their relentless miseries
their gracious castle is built of trust,
and in the battle fought with themselves
their goodness alone can give them shelter.
