Heltai Jenő: The other one (A másik in English)

Portre of Heltai Jenő
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

A másik (Hungarian)

És szólt a nő:

“Hajam ében

És lágyabb, mint a lágy selyem.

És itt a szívem közepében

Ujjong a boldog szerelem.

Tied a lelkem, tied a testem.

Te vagy az első, akit öleltem,

Boldog vagyok, mert a tied vagyok…“

És a férfi szólt:

„A másik elhagyott.“

És szólt a nő:

“Piros az ajkam

És harmatosabb, mint a rózsa kelyhe.

És végigfut az üdvök üdve rajtam,

Mikor így tartasz forrón átölelve.

Szemem sötétebb, mint az égbolt,

Mikor fergeteg zavarja…

Oh, mondd a másik szintén szép volt?

Fehér a válla, gömbölyű a karja?

Tudott-e súgni-búgni szintén,

Tudott-e édes csókot adni,

Meghalni karjaidban, mint én,

És új gyönyörre feltámadni?

És lángolt, mint a nap? Szelíd volt, mint a hold?“

S a férfi szólt:

"A másik csúnya volt."

És szólt a nő:

“És mégis nappal, éjjel,

Sóhajtva gondolsz vissza rája,

Amellyel az enyém nem ér fel,

Mi volt a titka, a varázsa, bája?

Miben olyan nagy, dicső, elérhetetlen?”

S a férfi szólt:

“A másikat szerettem!”

The other one (English)

And spoke the woman:

"My hair is ebony

And softer than the softest silky fleece,

And love rejoices joyfully

As my heart's own centre-piece.

My soul is yours, my body, too

A first for me: embracing you,

I'm happy because I'm yours, do you see?

And the man said:

"The other jilted me."

And the woman said

"My lips are red,

Dewier than the chalice of a rose,

Shudders of joy arise in me and spread

when you, with passion, hold me close.

My eyes are darker, than when the storms blew

And made the sky's clouds mill around...

Do tell, the other one, was she a beauty, too?

White of shoulder, with arms firm and round?

Could she whisper sweet nothings in your ear?

Could she sweetly give kisses like the rain?

Die in your arms when you hold her near,

Then rise to a new pleasure once again?

Was she gentle as the moon, or like the sun: aflame? “

And the man said:

"The other one was plain."

And the woman said:

"And yet, by night and day you sigh,

And she you do remember well,

She counts for more than I,

What secret has she, what charm, what spell?

Why is she great? No way can I infer… „

And the man said:

"I was in love with her"
