Heltai Jenő: A strain (Dal in English)

Portre of Heltai Jenő
Portre of Kery, Leslie A.

Back to the translator

Dal (Hungarian)

A nyomorúság országútján

Magányos vándor, ballagok,

Akik szerettek, messze tőlem,

Akit szerettem, elhagyott.

Akikkel együtt álmodoztam,

Már révbe értek rendre mind,

Én az örök küzdést, bolyongást

Elölről kezdhetem megint.

Nagy küzdelem, kevés dicsőség,

Mégis, hiába, szép a lét!

A rózsa, melyet magam téptem,

Mindig megérte tövisét.

A strain (English)

Along the highway of penury

I, lonely wanderer, amble on,

Far are the ones who once had loved me,

The one I loved, has left me. Gone.

Those with whom I had shared a daydream:

They each and all had reached a goal.

The constant battle, the loitering…

Once more I'll have to start it all.

Great is the strife, there's little glory,

Yet beauty still my life adorns!

The rose I plucked myself had always

Been worth the prickle of the thorns.
