Óda egy hivatalba lépő afgán miniszterhez (Hungarian)

Nem lopsz te többet! Ami még lopható
s egyáltalán mi még emelhető vala:
magas elődeid már mind elemelék -
Kongó puszta honod! Reménytelen egén

kifordított zsebek gyanánt lobognak a
felhők s mögöttük mint a forgalomból rég'
kiment tallér méláz antik fénnyel a nap -
nem váltható fel ő... hunyorog arcátlanul.

Szegény haza! nincs más dísze már csak amit
költői raknak rá: az őszi lomb nehéz
aranya, a folyók ezüstje s hölgyei
gyémánt szeme... de te tudod mindez mit ér!

Te a valóságot fürkészed gondteli
arccal s objektíven! s meg nem téveszthetőn -
A helyzettel, papa, te számolni akarsz
mesterséged finom szabályai szerint...

Látod ami van... és - elhiszem - szived
búsong! Mit messziről édes oázisnak
véltél: délibáb volt! szélhordta homok és
állathulladékok buckán ülsz merengve...

Értem keserved én! Ezért volt hát vitéz
könyökforgatásod az ősi mód szerént?
Ezért hajlongásod? Ilyen pályadíjért
nyaltál miként csiga útat e polc felé?

Ah, eljő majd a kor, tudod akárcsak én,
eljő a nap midőn minden tolvaj felel,
remegve állsz te is köztük, - ártatlanul!
szégyenkezve dicső eleid közt: kontár!
korcsa ivadék, aki már lopni sem tudott...

Ode to an afghan minister assuming office (English)

You’ll steal no more! What could be stolen,
Indeed, each and every thing that could be lifted,
your worthy predecessors have by now removed.
Your native land is a plangent waste! Its hopeless skies are

aflutter with clouds: like pockets turned inside out,
behind them, like an out-of-circulation Thaler coin,
the musing sun, its antique lustre impudently squinting
that whilst it lacks value, it is irreplaceable.

Poor homeland this, lacking in ornaments, except
the ones her poets bestow on her: the weighty gold
of autumn leaves, the silver of her streams, the diamond sparkle
of her ladies’ eyes… but then, the worth of these you know!

Grim-faced you ponder over stark reality:
you are objective, not one to be misled.
You want to know, old chap, exactly where you stand
so you may deal with things the way your trade decrees.

You know the score… and - I accept, your heart
is troubled.  What you had thought had been a nice oasis
was mere mirage, some wind-blown sand, and now
you sit on a mound of droppings and you ponder...

I understand your plight. Was this the prize for which
keeping to ancient rules you bravely elbowed ahead?
For this the bowing? Was this the reward for which
you licked your way, snail-like, to this appointment?

The time will surely come, you know and so do I,
the day when every thief is called to account.
You, too, will tremble among them - an innocent!
Shamefaced among your great forbears: a bungler!
The mongrel offspring who could not even steal…
